Estefanía Córdoba —Flying Has No Corners—

Barcelona, 1990-2020

Since I was a little girl, I paid attention to the way people communicated. It wasn't just their words that moved me: also their glances, their gestures, the secrets hidden by those sealed lips that waited, in the most magical silence, for the moment when something — or someone — long awaited would appear to them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, they say, and for many years, specifically since my adolescence, I dedicated many idle hours — or perhaps the most lively ones — to all kinds of images, dressing them with oils, acrylics, tempera, watercolors… At the same time, I was an avid reader of comics and fantasy novels; I also wrote reflections and explored life.

On the other hand, I was very struck by observing how the idea of female beauty had danced to the tune of historical eras until reaching our days: multicolored skins bathed in freckled constellations, endless manes of multiple shades, expressive and provocative eyes, and, finally, those silent lips with so, so much history. Until the day came to decide what to do with my life:

– But how are you going to make a living painting?

Parents always want the best for their daughters and sons, and that is how I changed the previous phrase to 'A word is worth more than a thousand images,' since I chose the path of Philology, thus continuing with my idea of expressing and communicating something. Even so, in my study, I continued drawing those mystical expressions that captured the magic of an imaginary, unknown person, and the colors of my thoughts. Over time, I decided on watercolors and ink, and on illustrations that were mostly feminine, so I kept creating muses that stayed in my room waiting to be seen.

And so I have arrived at a 2020 tinged with confinement, between language and literature classes, accompanied by some silent portrait.

– Why don't you show what you do?

It is true that, when people tell you something repeatedly, you start to dwell on it, but if different people tell you at different moments of your life, you already suspect that maybe they are right.

And this is how I get here, after so much, returning to images that are worth more than a thousand words, creating a magical bond through something that expresses what your inner self wants to see.

I invite you to get to know my mirrors, toto fly without corners
