Artist of the Season

Alicia Gomar

Fall 2023.

Os ofrecemos la primera parte de un artículo que aparece en el blog de Alicia Gomar, llamado “Art, a ritual of presence against accelerated times” and that she has given us. It is worth continuing reading it on their website to discover the 7 steps of the ritual.

Imagine for a moment that you could stop the flow of time, that you could slow down the accelerated pace of this life that we do not live, but rather consume, always from one experience to another, continually exhausted and dissatisfied. Doesn't it give the feeling that time is alien to us, that we have no control over it, that it is uninhabitable?

The philosopher Byung-Chul Han, in his book The Disappearance of Rituals, speaks of inhabiting time as if it were a home: “time that rushes by without interruption is not habitable.” Ritual is a temporal anchor, which helps us inhabit time, linger and enjoy every moment.

Como artistI have always wondered: Can art be an anchor that allows us to linger in the present moment? My experience is that it can be, especially when we practice it as a ritual.

Today many rituals have been abandoned, but some remain as small treasures that have been handed down generation after generation, as is the case of the matcha tea ceremony or Japanese calligraphy shodō (way of writing).

For me, the idea of ritual always reminds me of autumn, with its slow times and restorative quality. Autumn heals the wounds of the sun on our skin, it takes us back inside our homes, it is the season of harvesting and preserving and the time of reconnection with our intimate self. That's why I think it's the best time of year to harvest our annual experiences and transform them into creative projects.

My name is Alicia Gomar and when Phoenix Arts Europe He asked me for a text talking about me to present the autumn season, I thought, what better presentation than to share with you my own artistic ritual, which is my link with life and nature? I hope it can inspire you to create your own artistic ritual and lead you to enjoy the gift of inhabiting your time.
